Jook Lets You Share iPod Music
The Jook, an mp3 player addon made by Razor, allows people within 10 meters of each other to listen to each other’s music on their own headphones wirelessly.
The device attaches to your portable player (iPod, Zune and others) and uses a new tech standard to transmit music to another player nearby, provided there’s a Jook attached to that one too.
“This technology brings empowerment to the headphone as opposed to the MP3 player,” according to Jook CEO Min-Liang Tan, who calls it “an open-source version of music sharing” because you can use it with any type of music player.
This device also works across player formats, meaning that iPod owners can torture Zune users with their song choices, and vice versa.
With a punch of a button attached to the headphones, you can stop broadcasting your music and tune into someone else’s broadcast. Another punch of the little button allows both parties to listen to the same song together. Razer says Jook devices will have minimal power draws on mp3 players.
As you broadcast, Jook adds an audio watermark to the signal that identifies you – assuming you want to be identified – so that the cute girl on the bus who liked listening to your playlist will be able to click a button to tag your ID. When you get home, you’d be able to connect via social networks, instant messaging, or email.
The Jook device also allows you to make a personal profile (music tastes, etc.), store it, and beam it to other Jook users. And Jook bundled software will allow people to see who was listening to their music during the day (in case user has made this information available), what they rated it, and even visit their Facebook accounts.
